On The Threshold of the Rhine 01

The following project was developed under the supervision of Professor Martino Pedrozzi for the 2024 Diploma, with the theme of “Air Rights”. The diploma took place in the project city Basel and was supervised by the diploma director Professor Quintus Miller. The Rhine is the city’s ultimate public space. The project dares to confront the scale of this majestic natural element and accomplishes this with a building at the scale of the territory. A large linear volume, perfectly oriented north-south and touching the bank at a single point, ideally concludes the large green triangle facing the river and becomes the new threshold, the new transitional space between land and water. The structure is punctual, rhythmic, serial and confers to this subtle element the character of a long pile-dwelling. The space between it and the natural shore is configured as a protected basin - the section of which varies according to the distance between the two elements - devoted to public life and to the immediate enjoyment of the water. The visual impact of the new front is mediated by the introduction, within the volume, of a sequence of large, multistory holes, framing the extraordinary river landscape from the park.
